Few modern dive watches are as instantly recognisable as this particular formula. A broad rotating bezel, highly luminous skeletonised hands, scalloped case details and substantial steel bracelet give the Pagani Design PD-YS005 a very familiar appearance, but underneath that design is a genuinely useful combination of sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, 200m water resistance and a Japanese automatic movement.
The case measures 41mm across, placing the PD-YS005 firmly within modern dive-watch sizing without becoming excessively large. More importantly, the approximately 48mm lug-to-lug length keeps the overall footprint relatively controlled, meaning it should wear more manageably than the diameter alone might initially suggest. At around 13mm thick, it still has the substantial profile expected from an automatic sports watch. The full stainless-steel construction brings the total weight to approximately 158g, so this is not intended to disappear on the wrist; there is enough weight and presence here to make it feel like a proper steel dive-style watch.
Inside is the Japanese Miyota 8215 automatic movement. Automatic means that the watch winds itself through the movement of your wrist, although it can also be manually wound through the crown after it has stopped. When sufficiently wound, the movement provides approximately 42 hours of power reserve. The 8215 uses 21 jewels and runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, or six beats per second which produces the familiar stepped sweep of a mechanical seconds hand rather than the individual once-per-second tick found on most quartz watches. You also get hacking seconds, allowing the seconds hand to stop while setting the time more precisely. Miyota officially rates the movement between -20 and +40 seconds per day, so it should not be confused with quartz accuracy, but that is perfectly normal for an affordable mechanical movement. The 8215 is one of the longest-established Japanese automatic movements used at this end of the market. It is not particularly exotic or elaborately decorated, but that is not really its purpose. It is designed to be straightforward and dependable, making it a sensible choice for an everyday automatic watch.
Above the dial is sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective treatment. Sapphire is considerably more resistant to everyday surface scratching than conventional mineral glass and is particularly useful on a watch designed for outdoor use, swimming and regular wear. The anti-reflective treatment should also reduce some of the glare that can otherwise occur across a large dark dial in brighter conditions, helping the hands and markers remain easier to read. Surrounding the crystal is a rotating ceramic bezel which is considerably more resistant to scratching and fading than the aluminium inserts traditionally found on many dive watches, helping the bezel retain its appearance through regular use. The bezel rotates anticlockwise and can be used to monitor elapsed time by aligning its zero marker with the minute hand. This originally developed as a diving function, but it is equally useful for timing exercise, cooking, parking or anything else where you want a simple visual indication of how many minutes have passed.
The dial follows the same practical principle; large hour markers and broad skeletonised hands prioritise legibility, with C3 luminous material applied to the hands and markers to improve visibility once the surrounding light disappears. C3 produces the familiar strong green glow associated with many sports and dive watches. Good lume is particularly worthwhile here because it actually fits the intended purpose of the design rather than simply being another specification added to the list.
The case and bracelet are made from 316L stainless steel, with a mixture of brushed and polished surfaces providing some contrast without turning the entire watch into something overly shiny. The bracelet is secured with a folding clasp and continues the substantial feel of the case. The 20mm lug width is another sensible choice because it is one of the most common strap sizes available. Moving the watch onto rubber, fabric or leather later should therefore be straightforward. A rubber strap in particular could reduce some of the weight while keeping the sporting character intact.
A screw-down crown helps the PD-YS005 achieve its 200m, or 20 bar, water-resistance rating which is considerably more capability than most owners will realistically need and makes swimming, snorkelling and regular use around water perfectly reasonable provided the crown is correctly screwed down beforehand.
The PD-YS005 makes a strong argument; there are plenty of affordable automatic watches with impressive-looking specification sheets, but almost everything here actually suits the purpose of the watch. Sapphire protects the dial, ceramic protects the bezel, the screw-down crown and 200m rating make it genuinely useful around water, and the Miyota movement provides a proven mechanical foundation. The 41mm case also strikes a sensible balance. It has the presence most people expect from a contemporary dive watch without stretching towards some of the much larger 43mm and 44mm alternatives.
The obvious trade-off is originality. The inspiration behind the PD-YS005 is hardly subtle. Its scalloped bezel, skeletonised hands, dial layout and overall case design follow the modern Omega Seamaster Diver 300M extremely closely. For someone looking for an entirely original piece of watch design, that may count against it. For someone who simply likes the Seamaster style and wants an accessible automatic interpretation, however, the resemblance may be exactly the attraction.
For someone looking for their first automatic dive-style watch and wanting a strong specification without moving into several hundred pounds, the PD-YS005 offers a lot. The Miyota 8215 is established, the sapphire and ceramic should stand up well to regular use, and 200m water resistance gives the watch enough capability to be treated as a genuine everyday sports watch rather than something that needs protecting.
