Most dive watches place their rotating timing bezel around the outside of the case. The BERNY AM7081MS takes a rather different approach, moving the timing scale underneath the crystal and giving the watch the distinctive twin-crown appearance associated with vintage compressor-style divers. Add a Japanese automatic movement, sapphire crystal and 200m water resistance, and it offers considerably more than simply an unusual dial layout.
The case measures 42mm across, so this is certainly not a small watch. At approximately 14mm thick, it has the substantial profile you would expect from a proper sports watch, while the full stainless-steel bracelet brings the total weight to around 177g. For anyone who likes a dive watch to feel solid on the wrist, there is plenty of substance here. The weight is one of the main differences between the AM7081MS and the silicone-strap AM7081M. The basic watch is the same, but replacing silicone with a full steel bracelet changes the character considerably. The MS feels more substantial and slightly smarter, although anyone prioritising lower weight and comfort around water may prefer the lighter strap version.
Inside is the Japanese Miyota 8205 automatic movement. Automatic means that the watch winds itself through the movement of your wrist, although it can also be manually wound through the crown after it has stopped. When fully wound, the movement provides more than 42 hours of power reserve. The 8205 uses 21 jewels and runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, producing the familiar mechanical sweep of the seconds hand. It also includes hacking seconds, which stops the seconds hand while setting the time, allowing the watch to be synchronised more precisely. At three o'clock is a day-date display; rather than simply showing the numerical date, the 8205 adds the day of the week alongside it, giving the AM7081MS a little more everyday functionality without filling the dial with additional subdials. Miyota officially rates the 8205 between -20 and +40 seconds per day. This should not be confused with quartz accuracy, but it is perfectly normal for an affordable mechanical movement. The 8205 belongs to Miyota's long-established 82-series family, which has been used extensively in automatic watches for decades.
Above the dial is sapphire crystal which is considerably more resistant to everyday scratching than conventional mineral glass and makes particular sense on a sports watch likely to be worn outdoors, around water and for general wear without too much concern. BERNY also uses sapphire for the exhibition window on the case back. Turn the watch over and the Miyota movement remains visible underneath, allowing you to see the automatic winding rotor and part of the mechanism working inside. Sapphire on both sides is a particularly strong specification at this end of the market.
One of the most distinctive features sits underneath that front crystal; rather than using a conventional external dive bezel, the AM7081MS has an internal rotating countdown scale controlled by the second crown. The basic principle is straightforward; the scale can be positioned against the minute hand to monitor a period of time, while keeping the rotating mechanism protected underneath the sapphire crystal. It is useful for everything from swimming and exercise to cooking or simply keeping track of how long something has left. BERNY describes the watch as compressor-style, which is a distinction worth understanding. Historical compressor watches used water pressure as part of the case-sealing system. Modern compressor-style watches usually borrow the characteristic twin-crown and internal-bezel design without necessarily using that original pressure-activated construction. The AM7081MS should therefore be understood as compressor-inspired rather than as a traditional compressor case. Legibility is another major part of the design. The large hour markers and hands use strong luminous material, making the time much easier to read once the surrounding light disappears. On a watch designed around swimming and water use, good lume is more than simply a decorative feature.
The case and bracelet are made from stainless steel. The 20mm bracelet width keeps the proportions reasonably balanced and also gives you plenty of alternatives if you decide to change it later. Rubber and fabric straps in particular are widely available in 20mm and could reduce the weight considerably. The steel bracelet gives the AM7081MS a different personality from the standard silicone version. It makes the watch look slightly less like dedicated sporting equipment and allows it to work more naturally as a substantial everyday watch, although the 177g weight means you will certainly know it is there.
Water resistance is rated to 200m, or 20ATM which makes the AM7081MS well suited to swimming, snorkelling and regular use around water, provided the crowns are properly secured before getting it wet.
The AM7081MS makes it a strong argument; the Miyota movement is established and straightforward, sapphire is used on both sides, 200m water resistance gives the watch genuine sporting capability and the internal timing bezel gives it a character quite different from the conventional Submariner-style divers found across this price range. It is also a good example of why a familiar movement is not necessarily a disadvantage. The Miyota 8205 may not be exotic, but it provides automatic winding, hand-winding, hacking, day and date in a mechanical package that is relatively easy to understand. For someone buying an early automatic watch, those fundamentals matter more than having an obscure movement simply for the sake of being different.
For someone who wants their first automatic diver to look a little different from the usual formula, the AM7081MS makes a convincing case. The compressor-inspired design gives it its identity, while the Miyota movement, twin sapphire crystals and 200m water resistance provide enough practical substance underneath it.
