GMT watches are useful for a very simple reason: they allow you to keep track of more than one time zone without reaching for your phone. The Addiesdive AD2050 combines that genuinely practical complication with the familiar blue-and-red bezel of a classic travel watch, then adds a Swiss quartz movement, 200m water resistance and full stainless-steel construction to make it considerably more usable than its retro appearance might initially suggest.
The case measures 40mm across, putting the AD2050 in a particularly versatile position for a modern sports watch. Its approximately 48mm lug-to-lug length gives it enough presence without becoming excessively long across the wrist, while the 14mm thickness makes this a relatively substantial watch rather than something designed to disappear beneath a shirt cuff. The full stainless-steel bracelet reinforces that substantial character. A weight of approximatey 155g makes this is a solid sports watch rather than a particularly lightweight one.
Inside is the Swiss Ronda 515.24H quartz GMT movement. Quartz means that the watch is powered by a battery rather than a mechanical mainspring, giving it considerably greater everyday accuracy and removing the need to keep it wound or regularly worn. Ronda officially rates the movement between approximately -10 and +20 seconds per month which is dramatically more consistent than most affordable mechanical GMT watches, which can gain or lose a similar amount of time in a single day. Battery life is approximately 45 months under normal conditions, so the AD2050 should require very little attention beyond occasional time correction and eventual battery replacement.
The feature that makes the 515.24H more interesting than a conventional quartz movement is its additional GMT hand. The normal hour and minute hands show your local time, while the extra hand travels around the dial once every 24 hours and can be used to display a second time zone. This hand can also be quick-adjusted independently from the main time display which is particularly useful when travelling or keeping track of family, work or events in another part of the world. The 24-hour scale around the bezel works alongside the GMT hand. Because the additional hand makes one complete rotation per day rather than every twelve hours, it can distinguish between, for example, 3am and 3pm in the second time zone without requiring any mental calculation. A rotating 24-hour bezel can potentially add another layer of functionality as well. By offsetting the bezel from its normal position, it is possible to reference an additional time zone against the GMT hand, giving the watch considerably more travel functionality than the basic three-hand appearance initially suggests. At three o'clock is a conventional date display with a magnifying lens above it. The magnifier makes the relatively small date numerals easier to read at a glance and reinforces the familiar travel-watch design.
Above the dial is a domed mineral crystal with a blue anti-reflective coating. The curved profile gives the watch some additional visual depth and suits the slightly vintage-inspired design. Mineral glass is reasonably resistant to everyday knocks, but it is more susceptible to surface scratching than sapphire. The anti-reflective coating should at least help reduce glare in brighter conditions and make the dial easier to read through the curved crystal. The aluminium bezel is arguably the feature that gives this version most of its character. Aluminium has a slightly different character from ceramic. It is more susceptible to scratches and can gradually develop marks or fading over years of use, but that softer appearance arguably suits a vintage-inspired GMT particularly well.
The dial itself keeps things relatively straightforward. Large applied hour markers and broad hands prioritise legibility, while the contrasting GMT hand provides an immediate way of separating the second time-zone display from the normal hour hand.
The case and bracelet are made from 316L stainless steel with a combination of brushed and polished surfaces. Brushing keeps most of the watch relatively practical, while smaller polished sections provide enough contrast to stop the case looking completely utilitarian. The bracelet uses a folding safety clasp and measures 20mm where it meets the case which is one of the most common strap sizes available, so changing to rubber, fabric or leather later should be straightforward. A fabric strap could push the AD2050 further towards the vintage travel-watch side of its character, while rubber would reduce some of the weight and make particular sense if the watch is regularly used around water.
The crown screws into the case and the back is also screw-down, helping the AD2050 achieve its substantial 200m, or 20 bar, water-resistance rating which makes swimming, snorkelling and regular use around water perfectly reasonable provided the crown is correctly screwed down beforehand. It is considerably more capability than most people actually need from a travel watch and means you do not have to treat the AD2050 as something delicate simply because it has a GMT complication.
For someone who wants a first GMT watch that is genuinely useful rather than simply mechanically interesting, the AD2050 makes a compelling case. The Swiss Ronda movement provides excellent accuracy and proper dual-time functionality, the 200m rating makes it unusually capable and the familiar styling gives it the character of a classic travel watch without the cost normally associated with one.
