The Cadisen C8244 is the kind of watch that makes far more sense once you stop trying to put it into a single category. It is smart enough to wear with a shirt, simple enough for everyday use and, with 100m of water resistance, considerably more practical than the average traditional dress watch. For someone looking for one automatic watch to cover work, weekends and most of daily life, the Cadisen C8244 fits the bill.
The case measures 40mm across and 47mm from lug to lug, putting it in a versatile modern size that should work well on most medium wrists. At 13mm thick and approximately 145g, this is not an ultra-thin dress watch and it does have some substance on the wrist. Personally, I think that works in its favour here; it feels more like a proper everyday watch than something delicate that needs to be saved for special occasions.
Inside is the Japanese Miyota 8215 automatic movement. Automatic means the watch winds itself through the movement of your wrist, although it can also be manually wound through the crown when it has stopped. The 8215 also has a quick-set date, hacking seconds and approximately 42 hours of power reserve according to Miyota's official specification. The Miyota 8215 has been around in one form or another for decades, and the appeal is fairly straightforward. It is not trying to be an exotic or highly decorated movement; it is a practical Japanese automatic built to do the fundamentals well. Miyota rates the calibre at -20 to +40 seconds per day from the factory, so buyers expecting quartz-like precision should keep their expectations realistic, but this is normal territory for an entry-level mechanical movement.
Above the dial is a domed mineral crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Mineral glass is not as scratch-resistant as sapphire, but the domed shape gives the watch considerably more character than a completely flat crystal. The anti-reflective coating also helps reduce reflections when reading the dial in brighter conditions. The case is made from 316L stainless steel, with a 22mm bracelet, giving the watch a relatively broad and substantial feel. Luminous hands and dial details improve visibility in lower light, while water resistance is rated to 10 bar, or 100m which makes it a far more practical everyday option than the styling might initially suggest and easily covers normal daily water exposure and swimming.
The C8244's biggest strength is versatility. It does not have the obvious tool-watch appearance of a diver, nor is it so formal that it looks out of place with casual clothing. It sits somewhere in the middle, and for a first automatic watch, that can be a genuinely useful place to be.
