Some watches are designed primarily as instruments, while others are much closer to jewellery and the BERNY 2166L sits firmly in the second camp. Its compact rectangular case, champagne dial and multi-row gold-tone bracelet create something that feels as much like a piece of jewellery as a conventional wristwatch, while a Japanese quartz movement keeps the practical side straightforward.
BERNY lists the case at approximately 25mm across, making this a genuinely small watch by modern standards. This is very much part of the design rather than something that needs to be corrected with larger proportions. The compact case allows the bracelet to remain a major part of the overall appearance and makes the watch particularly well suited to smaller wrists or anyone who prefers traditional jewellery-watch sizing. At only around 7mm thick, it is exceptionally slimline as well which allows the 2166L to sit close to the wrist and work naturally with smarter clothing without the bulk normally associated with automatic sports watches. The complete watch weighs approximately 52g; enough to avoid feeling insubstantial while remaining considerably lighter than most full-size stainless-steel watches.
Inside is the Japanese Miyota 5Y30 quartz movement. Quartz means that the watch is powered by a battery rather than relying on the movement of your wrist or requiring regular winding through the crown which gives it considerably more consistent everyday accuracy than most affordable mechanical watches and makes it particularly easy to own. Miyota officially rates the 5Y30 to approximately ±20 seconds per month and estimates around two years of battery life under normal use. When the battery eventually runs out, it can simply be replaced rather than requiring the regular winding or resetting associated with a mechanical watch. The 5Y30 is also particularly appropriate here because Miyota designed it specifically for smaller and more jewellery-orientated watches. Its compact dimensions allow BERNY to keep the case slim without reducing the watch to a basic two-hand display; you still get conventional hours, minutes and seconds. This is a good example of why quartz should not automatically be considered a compromise; a mechanical movement might sound more impressive on a specification sheet, but it would make achieving a watch this small, light and slim considerably more difficult. For this particular design, quartz arguably makes more sense.
The dial itself is deliberately restrained. Simple applied hour markers and three slim hands sit against a champagne-coloured background, keeping the watch easy to read without adding a date window or additional complication that would take up valuable space on such a compact dial. The gold-tone finish continues from the case into the bracelet, giving the whole watch a much more cohesive appearance than fitting the same case to a conventional leather strap. The multiple rows of small polished links also create considerably more texture than a standard three-link bracelet and reinforce the jewellery-like character of the design.
Both the case and bracelet are stainless steel underneath the gold-coloured finish which keeps it considerably more accessible while retaining the warm appearance that defines this particular version. The bracelet is adjustable and BERNY lists a maximum wearable length of approximately 180mm. Adjustment tools are also supplied, allowing excess bracelet sections to be removed to achieve a better fit. Because this is a relatively small jewellery-style watch, checking the maximum length before ordering is particularly worthwhile.
Above the dial is mineral crystal. Mineral glass is perfectly sensible at this price point and provides good everyday protection. It is more susceptible to surface scratching than sapphire, however, the relatively small crystal area gives it less exposed surface than a large sports watch. There is no luminous material on the dial or hands which means the 2166L will not be particularly useful for checking the time in darkness, but strong lume would feel slightly out of place on a watch designed primarily around elegance and compact proportions.
Water resistance is rated to 30m, or 3ATM. That is sufficient for ordinary rain, hand washing and accidental splashes, but I would not recommend the 2166L for swimming, showering or repeated exposure to water. BERNY itself specifically advises against those uses.
The 2166L does not try to be a miniature dive watch or shrink a conventional men's sports watch onto a smaller wrist. Instead, the bracelet, rectangular case and compact dial are designed together to create something intentionally more decorative. The quartz movement is another strength in that context; you can leave the watch unworn for several days, return to it and expect it to still be showing the correct time. For something that may be rotated alongside other jewellery or saved for particular outfits and occasions, this is a particularly convenient feature.
For someone who wants a small, elegant watch that can work almost like a bracelet while still providing accurate, low-maintenance timekeeping, the BERNY 2166L makes a convincing case. Its Miyota movement provides the dependable foundation, while the compact proportions and multi-row gold-tone bracelet give it a character that is noticeably different from the usual round everyday watch.
