The Cadisen C8220M takes the familiar shape of a classic Japanese dive watch and gives it a specification that is difficult to ignore at this price. The large luminous markers, crown positioned towards four o’clock, rotating timing bezel and five-link bracelet all make it look unmistakably like a proper sports watch, but its dimensions are far more versatile than the bold design initially suggests.

The case measures 40mm across with a short 45mm lug-to-lug, placing it in a genuinely wearable sweet spot. It has enough presence to feel substantial, but the compact distance between the lugs should stop it from overhanging all but the smallest wrists. At 13mm thick and approximately 126g, it still feels reassuringly solid rather than overly delicate, exactly as you would expect from a dive-style watch.

Inside is the Japanese NH35 automatic movement. Automatic means that the watch winds itself through the movement of your wrist, although it can also be wound manually through the crown after it has stopped. It also includes hacking seconds, allowing the seconds hand to stop while you set the time more precisely, alongside a quick-set date and approximately 41 hours of power reserve. The NH35 has become one of the most widely used movements in affordable automatic watches, and for good reason. It is dependable, straightforward to maintain and proven across an enormous range of watches. It is not glamorous or unusual, but that is exactly why it works so well in a watch designed to be worn regularly.

Above the dial is sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Sapphire is considerably more resistant to everyday scratching than standard mineral glass, while the coating helps to reduce reflections in brighter conditions. Sitting above the date window is a 2.5-times magnifier, making the date noticeably easier to read at a glance. The 120-click bezel rotates anticlockwise only, allowing it to be used as a simple elapsed-time counter. Its insert is ceramic, which is more resistant to fading and surface scratching than the aluminium inserts normally found on cheaper dive watches. The hands and markers use BGW9 luminous material, producing a distinctive ice-blue glow in darker conditions rather than the more traditional green.

Water resistance is rated to 20 bar, equivalent to 200m. Combined with the screw-down crown, this gives the watch enough protection for swimming, snorkelling and ordinary recreational water use, as well as everything it is likely to encounter during daily wear. As with any watch, water resistance depends on the seals remaining in good condition over time, but the official 200m rating makes this a genuinely capable sports watch rather than something that merely looks like one.

What makes the C8220M particularly appealing is how balanced it is. The case is versatile, the movement is established, and meaningful specifications such as sapphire crystal, a ceramic bezel and BGW9 lume have not been sacrificed to reach the price. The obvious trade-off is originality. Its inspiration is clear, and buyers looking for a completely distinctive independent design may prefer something else. For anyone who enjoys the familiar Japanese dive-watch look and wants a strong everyday automatic without spending several hundred pounds, though, the C8220M offers a great deal for the money. Available with orange, blue, white or green dials.

The 2.5-times date magnifier is prominent and will divide opinion. It makes the date easier to read, but buyers who prefer a cleaner, uninterrupted crystal may find it slightly distracting.
