Field watches were originally designed around a fairly simple requirement: tell the time clearly, survive everyday use and avoid adding anything unnecessary. The Militado ML05 follows that same basic philosophy, combining a highly legible military-inspired dial with a sandblasted steel case, nylon strap and compact proportions, then adding sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance and an unusual sweeping quartz movement underneath.
The case measures 38mm across, which suits this style particularly well. Field watches have historically been relatively compact, and 38mm gives the ML05 enough presence to feel contemporary without losing the restrained proportions that make the design so versatile. Measuring approximately 47.5mm from lug to lug gives it a little more presence across the wrist than the diameter alone might suggest. At around 10.5mm thick including the raised crystal, however, it remains relatively slim and should sit much more comfortably beneath a cuff than the average automatic dive watch.
The case itself is made from 316L stainless steel with a sandblasted finish. Rather than trying to create the shine of a polished dress watch, the matte surface diffuses light and gives the ML05 the much more functional appearance associated with traditional military equipment. The finish has a practical benefit as well; fine surface marks generally stand out less dramatically against a matte case than they would across a large polished surface, which makes sense on a watch intended to be worn casually and without too much concern.
Inside is the Japanese TMI VH31 quartz movement. Quartz means the watch is powered by a battery rather than being wound mechanically through the crown or movement of your wrist, giving it considerably greater everyday accuracy than most affordable mechanical watches. The VH31 is more interesting than the average quartz movement because of the way it moves its seconds hand. Most quartz watches advance once every second, producing the familiar individual tick. The VH31 moves in quarter-second increments, making four smaller steps every second which creates a noticeably smoother sweep around the dial and gives the ML05 some of the visual character normally associated with a mechanical watch without sacrificing the convenience of quartz. TMI officially rates the VH31 to approximately ±15 seconds per month, meaning it should be substantially more accurate than most entry-level automatic watches. Battery life is estimated at around two years under normal use, a combination that makes a great deal of sense in a field watch. There is no need to wind it, no concern about it stopping after a weekend off the wrist and considerably less need for regular time correction. You can simply pick it up and expect it to be ready.
Above the dial is a raised top-hat style sapphire crystal with a clear anti-reflective coating. The shape is deliberately vintage-inspired, standing noticeably proud of the case rather than using the completely flat crystal found on many modern sports watches. Sapphire is significantly more resistant to everyday surface scratching than standard mineral glass, so the ML05 manages to achieve that older appearance without accepting one of the main disadvantages normally associated with vintage-style acrylic crystals. The anti-reflective treatment also helps reduce glare across the dial in brighter conditions which is particularly appropriate here because excellent legibility is really the entire point of the field-watch design. Large Arabic numerals, a clear minute track and strongly contrasting hands make the time exceptionally straightforward to read. There is no chronograph, rotating bezel or collection of small subdials competing for attention. The luminous material continues that emphasis once the surrounding light disappears; the green C3 lume across the hands and relevant dial markings, help the watch remain readable in poorer lighting.
The case uses drilled lug holes, another small feature borrowed from more utilitarian watches. Rather than hiding the ends of the spring bars completely inside the lugs, the holes allow them to be accessed from the outside, making strap changes considerably easier. That is particularly useful because the ML05 has a standard 20mm lug width which is one of the most common strap sizes available, giving you an enormous choice of nylon, leather, canvas and rubber alternatives. The nylon strap suits the watch particularly well; it is light, inexpensive and keeps the military-inspired character intact, although changing to brown leather could make the same watch feel considerably smarter while canvas or another nylon strap can change the colour without altering the basic style.
The crown screws into the case rather than simply pushing into place. Combined with the solid screw-down case back, that helps the ML05 achieve its 100m, or 10 bar, water-resistance rating which makes normal swimming perfectly reasonable provided the crown is properly screwed down beforehand and gives the watch considerably more everyday flexibility than many vintage-inspired field watches. It is not, however, a dedicated dive watch as there is no rotating timing bezel. The 100m rating is best understood as giving a practical everyday field watch enough water resistance that you do not need to become overly concerned when it gets wet.
And that is really where the ML05 makes its strongest argument. It takes an old, proven design and makes it extremely easy to live with. Sapphire replaces the easily scratched crystals traditionally associated with vintage watches, a screw-down crown provides useful water resistance and the VH31 keeps the watch accurate without completely losing the visual appeal of a sweeping seconds hand. Quartz is arguably a strength rather than a compromise here. An automatic movement would provide more mechanical interest, but it would also normally make the watch thicker, less accurate and more dependent on regular wear or winding whereas quartz offers accuracy and convenience while the four-step seconds hand preserves some of the visual charm that can be lost with a conventional once-per-second quartz movement. This makes the ML05 a dependable field watch that you can put on and use without thinking about it.
For someone looking for their first proper everyday watch, the Militado ML05 is particularly easy to recommend. The 38mm case is genuinely versatile, the sapphire crystal adds useful durability, the 100m water resistance makes it difficult to inconvenience and the VH31 provides the low-maintenance accuracy of quartz without the visual distraction of a conventional ticking seconds hand.
