Pagani Design PD-1776 – 32mm Quartz Watch | VH65 | Sapphire Crystal
The Pagani Design PD-1776 takes a more traditional smaller sizing and makes it deliberately decorative; a compact 32mm case, crystal-set bezel, colourful sunray dial and polished steel bracelet give it considerably more jewellery-like character than the average everyday watch, while sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance and a Japanese quartz movement add some useful practicality underneath.
The case measures 32mm across, which is genuinely compact by modern standards and particularly well suited to this style of watch. Rather than taking a larger sports-watch design and simply shrinking it down, the proportions allow the dial, bezel and bracelet to work together as a much more traditional women's watch. The approximately 41mm lug-to-lug length gives it a little more presence across the wrist than the diameter alone might suggest, while the case measures around 11.5mm thick. At approximately 91g on the stainless-steel bracelet, there is also enough weight here for the PD-1776 to feel substantial rather than delicate. This may be particularly appealing to someone who likes smaller watches but still wants the solidity of a full steel case and bracelet.
Inside is the Japanese TMI VH65 quartz movement. Quartz means that the watch is powered by a battery rather than being wound mechanically through the crown or movement of your wrist. The result is far more consistent everyday timekeeping than most affordable mechanical watches, along with the ability to leave it unworn for days or weeks without having to reset it when you return. The VH65 is a little more interesting than the average quartz movement because of its sweeping seconds hand. A conventional quartz watch usually moves its seconds hand once every second, creating the familiar individual tick whereas the VH65 moves the centre seconds hand four times per second, producing a noticeably smoother sweep around the dial visually akin to a mechanical watch. TMI estimates approximately two years of battery life from the movement under normal use. When the battery eventually runs out, it can simply be replaced rather than requiring the regular winding or resetting associated with a mechanical movement.
At three o'clock is another unusual feature: a separate pointer-date subdial. Rather than using a conventional rectangular date window, a small hand points towards the current date around its own scale. The simplicity of this works in the watch's favour in my opinion; a chronograph would add controls and additional information that this design does not really need. The small date display provides something visually interesting while keeping the central dial relatively clean.
The dial itself is one of the defining features. Different colour versions are available in ice blue, green and white, with a sunray-style finish that changes noticeably depending on the surrounding light. The applied hour markers add considerably more decoration than simple printed batons, while the stone-set details push the watch further towards jewellery without abandoning the basic legibility of an analogue dial. This feel continues around the bezel, which is set with clear decorative stones..
Above is sapphire crystal which is considerably more resistant to everyday surface scratching than conventional mineral glass and is one of the specifications I am particularly pleased to see on a watch designed around a bright, decorative dial. The anti-reflective treatment should also help reduce some of the glare that can otherwise occur across a highly polished watch in brighter conditions.
The case and bracelet are made from 316L stainless steel, giving the PD-1776 more substance than a basic plated fashion watch. The bracelet measures approximately 17mm where it meets the case and continues the polished, jewellery-like appearance of the rest of the design. This 17mm fitting is slightly less common than 16mm, 18mm or 20mm if you eventually wished to change the bracelet for another strap.
The crown screws into the case rather than simply pushing into place. Combined with the solid case back, this helps the PD-1776 achieve its 100m water-resistance rating which is a surprisingly useful specification on a watch that looks this dressy. It means normal swimming should be perfectly reasonable provided the crown is properly screwed down before the watch enters the water. This gives the PD-1776 considerably more versatility than many jewellery-style watches, which often offer only 30m or 50m resistance and are better kept away from regular water exposure. It is still not a dedicated dive watch, but it does not need to be treated as though the slightest splash will damage it. And that is really where the PD-1776 makes sense. It looks considerably more decorative than most practical everyday watches, but it does not sacrifice all of the useful specifications to achieve that appearance.
For someone who wants a smaller watch that feels noticeably more special than a basic everyday quartz model but is still practical enough to wear regularly, the Pagani Design PD-1776 makes a convincing case. The 32mm proportions and stone-set detailing provide the jewellery-like character, while sapphire crystal, the unusual sweeping-seconds of the VH65 and 100m water resistance give it considerably more substance underneath.

Water resistance is rated to 100m/10 bar and the watch uses a screw-down crown, making normal swimming reasonable provided the crown is correctly secured before entering the water.
