Tactical Frog VS75 – 41mm Solar Chronograph Seiko VS75B Movement Sapphire

There's something quietly brilliant about a solar-powered watch, and the Tactical Frog leans into that idea harder than most. No battery to replace every two or three years, no automatic winding to worry about if it's been sitting in a drawer, no rituals at all - just sunlight (or honestly, indoor lighting) keeping it running indefinitely. The movement inside is the Seiko VS75B, a solar-powered chronograph made by Seiko's own movement division, and it's a more sophisticated piece of engineering than most quartz movements you'll find at this price, making it excellent value.

Whilst most quartz chronographs need a battery swap every couple of years, the VS75B sidesteps this entirely; the dial collects light and feeds a rechargeable cell underneath the movement, and the watch will keep running for months on a full charge even in the dark. You put it on your wrist, give it a few minutes of daylight here and there, and it just runs. That's the kind of low-maintenance reliability that mechanical watches, for all their charm, genuinely can't match.

The case sits at 41mm with a 49mm lug-to-lug and 13.9mm thickness - a proper sports chronograph size, noticeable on the wrist without crossing into oversized territory. This is partly down to it being made from solid 316L stainless steel throughout, including the bracelet and the screw-down caseback, which, whilst relatively industry standard at this price point, is still a very good addition.

The crystal is a particular highlight. It's Japanese Fuji sapphire (one of the more respected sapphire sources) with a four-layer anti-reflective coating - that faint blue tint you sometimes see on premium dive watches comes from exactly this kind of treatment. The result is a dial window that reads almost glass-clear in most lighting and shrugs off glare in bright sun, which matters more on a chronograph than on most watches because there's a lot more going on under there to read.

The bezel is ceramic with a tachymeter scale (the markings around the edge used to calculate speed over a measured distance) - ceramic is good because it resists scratches and fading in a way aluminium simply can't, and it's a meaningful step up from what you'd typically see at this price. The dial itself uses a double-layer construction with applied 3D indices and an applied logo, which gives it real depth when the light catches it, and the lume (the glow-in-the-dark coating on the hands and markers) is Japanese C3 green - one of the brightest compounds available, the kind that's genuinely useful in the dark rather than just present on a spec sheet.

Water resistance is rated to 200m, which covers swimming, snorkelling, and recreational diving without a second thought. Just screw the crown down before anything wet, and skip the hot shower - water vapour can sneak past seals that cold water can't.

On top of all that it comes in a unique variation with a grey dial and yellow and light blue accents, quirky maybe, but we just can't get enough of it.
